Drivers need to know the towing laws in Nevada, especially if their car could be towed without warning. Tow truck companies have to follow strict rules, but many drivers don’t know when a tow is legal or what their rights are after the tow.

When you can tow a car in Nevada

Nevada towing laws say that a car can be towed if it is parked illegally, left behind, blocking traffic, or posing a safety risk. If a car is involved in a crime, doesn’t have the right registration, or is parked in a restricted area like a fire lane or disabled parking space, the police can order it to be towed. If the right signs are up and the vehicle is breaking the rules, NV rules allow towing on private property.

Rules for towing on private property

If someone parks their car without permission, the owner of the property can ask for it to be towed. There should be clear signs that say which cars will be towed and the name of the towing company. If these rules aren’t followed, the tow may break the law and be challenged.

Rules for taking things away and keeping them

Most of the time, cars that have been towed are taken to a yard where they are kept. Towing companies have to tell the police and give them information about where the car is stored, according to the rules for impound. Fees must be clear and fair. Even if they can’t pay the towing fees right away, owners have the right to get their things back from the car. You can’t keep cars for an unlimited amount of time.

What car owners can do after their car is towed

As a car owner, you have the right to contest an improper tow, ask for proof, and get a detailed list of charges. The owner may be able to get their money back if the tow was illegal. Also, Nevada law says that a car can’t be sold or destroyed too quickly after being impounded.

Questions that are often asked

Can someone tow my car without telling me?
Yes. If the car breaks Nevada’s towing laws, you don’t always have to give notice before towing.

If I get there in time, can I stop the tow?
If the car hasn’t been taken away yet, you can often get it back by paying a drop fee.

What if someone towed my car from private property?
Check the signs and get permission. It may be possible to contest NV actions that involve improperly towing a vehicle.

How long do I have to get my car back?
This depends on the rules for impounding, but you should act quickly to avoid extra fees.

Am I allowed to keep my things?
Yes. As a car owner, you have the right to get your things back from the car.
